Sheridan College Craft Lecture

February 14th 2013
Sheridan College Ontario, Canada.

Content and Theme of Lycia's Lecture:

An overview of some arts practices grounded in contemporary fine arts (sculptural installation, land art) and textiles (domestic craft) in Canada, Australia and beyond.

Artwork as "concepts-through-material culture" where contemporary textiles reference the body, trauma and migration.

Slides of my Irish Linen Memorial, a site-conscious memorial, which re-narrates the almost 4,000 deaths which took place during the fraught period in contemporary history in Northern Ireland, called ‘The Troubles’, 1966-2006. An intimate, yet public, monument to those killed, this counter-monument is made from white, linen handkerchiefs, with the names printed and overstitched with embroidery and spots of human hair. It is an artwork that seeks to rethread a sense of the recuperative work involved in a community emerging from conflict, the place of my birth.

Regional Arts Australia National Conference

Co-facilitator, with installation artist Dr. Jen Brown of two differently themed "speed meetings-matings!":
Speed Meetings This session of speed meetings works with the theme of 'resilience' to facilitate focused networking among conference participants. It will provide an opportunity to get to know one another, form bonds, inspire further talk throughout the conference, swap emails, check out websites, go to specific presentations, share publications, and dialogue with others. We hope this may inspire some longer-term creative collaborations that can transcend diverse locations and cultures.
Momentum Speed Meetings This session of speed meetings works with the theme of 'momentum' to facilitate focused networking among conference participants. It provides an opportunity to get to know one another, form bonds, inspire further talk throughout the conference, swap emails, check out websites, go to specific presentations, share publications, and dialogue with others.
